Free online crossword puzzles — multilingual and unlimited
Free crossword puzzles in English, French, and Spanish. Five themes, three grid sizes, three difficulty levels, more than 4,000 clues, and auto-saved progress. Every puzzle is generated on demand — no two are ever the same.
Themed crosswords: pick your world
Choose a theme from the menu in the top left: animals (mammals, birds, fish, insects), food (fruits, vegetables, herbs, world dishes), nature (landscapes, climate, geology, flora and fauna), sport (Olympic disciplines, martial arts, water sports), or general knowledge (rhetoric, music, philosophy, history). The All mode mixes all five pools for the most varied puzzles, perfect for general crossword fans.
Easy, medium, and hard crosswords
The easy mode draws short words of 3 to 6 letters with direct clues — a great fit for crossword beginners or for playing with kids. Medium balances word length and clue subtlety. Hard mode pulls from a pool of more than 600 rare or specialised words (scientific, technical, gastronomic vocabulary) and allows entries up to 15 letters. Combined with the 17×17 grid, it's the toughest challenge on the site, ideal for seasoned solvers.
Three grid sizes: 9×9, 13×13, or 17×17
The 9×9 grid is solved in a few minutes, perfect for a coffee break or a first try. The 13×13, the standard newspaper size, takes around twenty minutes. The 17×17 is a long puzzle of 35+ words, ideal for a focused weekend session. Every size adapts automatically to your screen width, from smartphone to large desktop monitor.
Crossword puzzles in English, French, and Spanish
The game comes in three fully localised versions: English, French, and Spanish, each with its own dictionary of more than 1,200 words and native clues. An excellent way to grow your vocabulary in a foreign language: switch the language from the top-right menu and brush up on your French or Spanish while playing. ESL learners can start with the easy English grids to anchor core vocabulary.
Two validation modes: live letters or word-lock
The ABC button at the top of the grid toggles between two modes. When on, every letter you type is validated immediately: green if correct, red if wrong — great for learning. When off, no colour appears as you type: a word is only validated once it's both completely filled AND correct, and its cells then lock permanently — a tougher mode closer to a paper crossword. Combine with hard mode for an experience close to a real test.
Auto-resume and timer
Your in-progress puzzle is automatically saved in your browser (localStorage). Close the tab, come back the next day or even days later: your game resumes exactly where you left off, timer included. The Restart button clears the letters and resets the counter to play the same puzzle from scratch. The New puzzle button generates a different one with your current settings.
Crosswords on mobile and tablet
The interface adapts to touch screens: on smartphones, the clue list becomes a fixed banner at the bottom of the screen that follows the active word and stays visible above the virtual keyboard thanks to automatic position adjustment. The left and right arrows on the banner let you jump quickly between clues. The 9×9 and 13×13 grids are particularly comfortable on mobile; the 17×17 is best enjoyed on tablet or desktop.
Why play crosswords?
Crossword puzzles train memory, grow vocabulary, sharpen logic, and offer a quiet, focused break away from notifications. This site is entirely free, no account required: no personal data is collected, your progress stays on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Which grid size should I start with?
For a first try, the 9×9 grid in easy mode is ideal: it solves in a few minutes with short words and direct clues. Once comfortable, move up to the 13×13 in medium mode, the standard newspaper size. Save the 17×17 in hard mode for serious sessions when you have time to dig in.
What's the difference between ABC on and off?
When ABC is on (green), every letter you type is validated immediately: green if correct, red if wrong. When it's off, no colour appears as you type; a word is only validated once it's completely filled AND correct, and its cells then lock permanently (you can't change them). The off mode is tougher and closer to a paper crossword.
Is my game data sent to a server?
No. Your full progress (grid, typed letters, timer, settings) stays in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server. If you switch devices or clear your cache, the current game is lost.
